Front Brake Types: Drum Brakes vs. Disc Brakes

The braking system is one of the most crucial safety features in any vehicle. Its primary function is to slow down or stop a car in the shortest possible distance, balancing high-speed performance with maximum safety. Brakes work by using friction between rotating and stationary components to create a braking torque that opposes the wheel's rotation. This torque, in turn, causes the ground to exert a braking force on the wheels, slowing the car down and eventually bringing it to a stop.

 

 

Automobile brakes are generally categorized into two main types: drum brakes and disc brakes. Both types are used as front brakes.

 

Drum Brakes

Drum brakes are a common type of wheel brake, where the rotating part is a drum-shaped brake drum with a cylindrical inner surface.The stationary component consists of circular brake shoes fitted with friction pads. When you brake, a cylinder (in hydraulic systems) or a cam (in pneumatic systems) forces the two brake shoes outward.They press against the inner surface of the brake drum, generating the friction needed to create braking torque.

 

 

Drum brakes are advantageous because they are low cost, resistant to dust, and can be easily adapted to serve as a parking brake. However, they have several drawbacks, including their large size and heavy weight. They also have poor heat dissipation, which can lead to brake fade, and their braking stability is less consistent compared to disc brakes.

 

 

Disc Brakes

Currently, disc brakes are the most common front brakes on passenger cars. These are typically caliper-type disc brakes. The rotating part is a circular brake disc mounted on the wheel.The stationary part is a block-shaped brake caliper with friction pads. The caliper is a clamp-like component that grips the brake disc with two legs.
